Discover Oriental, North Carolina

The Sailing Capital of North Carolina, a Neuse River village where the boats outnumber the people.

Oriental is a small town with salt water in its bones. Known for decades as the Sailing Capital of North Carolina, this Pamlico County village sits where the Neuse River meets a web of navigable creeks near the Pamlico Sound, and by some counts the boats docked here outnumber the residents more than three to one. It is easygoing, friendly, and unapologetically itself, a place people visit and then decide to call home.

Life on the water

Life here centers on the harbor. The Town Dock is the social heart of the village, with a coffee shop at the end of it, and the calendar fills with sailing regattas, from the Oriental Cup to club races through the season. Lou Mac Park and the Neuse River Recreation Area open the waterfront to everyone, and galleries, seafood spots, and a village brewery round out a walkable, bike-friendly downtown. Off the sailboat, the in-shore fishing on the Neuse and the sound is some of the best around.

On the water

This is a market built for boaters. Many homes have their own docks or a water view, and the creeks that crisscross the area, along with the town's marinas, put the Neuse and the Intracoastal Waterway within easy reach. Oriental sits at mile marker 181 on the Intracoastal Waterway, a welcoming harbor for cruisers heading north or south.

Getting around

Oriental sits on the Neuse in Pamlico County, connected by road to New Bern, the nearest larger city, with its restaurants, galleries, and services. For many here, though, the more important connections are the creeks and the open water.

Oriental is served by Pamlico County Schools.
